THE RATE of registered unemployment in Slovakia increased by 0.26 percentage points from June and stood at 12.07 percent at the end of July, according to data released by the central office of Slovakia’s Labour, Social Affairs and Family Office and is now at the highest level since March 2005, the SITA newswire reported. Since July 2008, the jobless rate has increased by 4.6 percentage points.
Slovakia’s labour offices registered as unemployed 319,937 people who could immediately start working; this was 6,861 more people than the previous month and 125,096 more than one year ago.
The jobless rate has been constantly rising since October 2008 with the number of registered unemployed persons reaching several-year highs month after month. Employment in Slovakia has been significantly affected by the global economic crisis which has particularly hit industries which are dependent on foreign demand.
