Slovakia’s labour offices registered as unemployed 319,937 people who could immediately start working; this was 6,861 more people than the previous month and 125,096 more than one year ago.

The jobless rate has been constantly rising since October 2008 with the number of registered unemployed persons reaching several-year highs month after month. Employment in Slovakia has been significantly affected by the global economic crisis which has particularly hit industries which are dependent on foreign demand.
