ZAKOPANE is one of the best-known tourist locations in Poland. It lies on the Polish side of the Tatras.
In winter numerous ski slopes and perfect weather conditions make this area ideal for experienced and beginner skiers. In summer, rock climbers come to take on the difficult routes in the High Tatras, as well the easier ones in the picturesque hills surrounding the city.
Zakopane offers the authentic folk culture of the Podhale region highlanders, the repertoire of the well-known "Witkacy" Theatre, while jazz and rock resonates from the city's cellars and cafes.
Since both sides of the border share similar geographical conditions and culture there are good opportunities for mutual cooperation. There is, for example, potential for developing tourist packages to attract more visitors from Western countries to the region.
But even though there has been talk of cross-border cooperation over the last few years, little has actually been done to take advantage of the area's potential.
