THE NUMBER of tax offices in Slovakia will decrease and the Tax Investigation Office should be cancelled as of next year reads a plan prepared by the Finance Ministry.

A draft law regarding the state administration of tax affairs stipulates that, as of January 1, 2005, there will be a Central Tax Directorate and eight tax offices operating in regional cities.

The current specialised taxation offices will be replaced by universal tax centres, which will carry out all tasks related to tax administration. The new offices will operate within the territory of their respective region, but the jurisdiction for selected tax entities will be nationwide.

Advocates of the plan hope that the tax administration reform will increase the effectiveness of the system.
