CONSTRUCTION has begun in France, Germany, and Austria on new routes for high-speed trains (TGV) that will also go to Slovakia. "It has become necessary for part of the route to end in Slovakia," EMP Miroslav Mikolášik told SITA.
New TGVs will significantly improve railway connections between western and eastern Europe, which will lead to greater mobility and support economic progress within the EU.
The new TGV route will start in Paris and continue to Strasbourg, Munich, Salzburg, and Vienna before ending in Bratislava. The project is a product of the Maastricht agreement, which calls on the European community to share the costs of developing a trans-European connection in transportation, telecommunications, and energy infrastructure.
Route construction costs are being financed mainly from EU resources. Apart from the Paris - Bratislava route, the project also plans connections such as Warsaw - Riga - Tallin - Helsinki, Lyon - Terst - Ljubljana - Budapest, Berlin - Milan - Palermo.
