HUNGARY has agreed to recognize some Slovak wine produced in the country's southeast corner under the protected trademark Tokay, with both sides agreeing to continue Tokay negotiations in the run-up to EU entry.
Although Slovakia has over 900 hectares of vineyards producing Tokay grapes, Hungary has in the past challenged the quality, authenticity, and tradition of the Slovak Tokay product, and in 1993 it was recognised by the EU as the sole authorised producer of the wine.
