Who is the king of Slovak food retailers? For many years the British retailer Tesco reigned supreme in this segment. However, change came aboout in 2020 and the German discount retailer Lidl took first place. What was 2022 like?
Marked by the war in Ukraine, fears about its further developments and inflation, last year was very specific. How did it reflect on sales, the profits of the largest chain stores?
Index magazine compiled a ranking of the largest food retailers in Slovakia. It was created based on data from the Finstat website. In general, all companies improved their all-time records in 2022. Except for one retailer, they also reported profits.
10) Coop Jednota Žilina
Sales: €124.6 million (+ 13 percent)
Economic result: €2.2 million (- 11 percent)
Number of stores: 126
Coop Jednota is divided into several regional companies. The one based in Žilina, northern Slovakia, is a newcomer to the list of the top ten largest food retailers. Last year, last place belonged to Coop Jednota, based in Čadca. While the former was able to increase sales by 13 percent year-on-year, the latter's sales only increased by 10 percent. In the end, the difference of €1 million meant a former placed in the ranking. The chain operates 126 stores located around the towns of Žilina and Trenčín. Roughly half are grocery stores, the other half are supermarkets.
