Top Slovak media

The Market & Media & Lifestyle – Target Group Index (MML-TGI) survey, conducted by the Median SK agency in licensed cooperation with the British Market Research Bureau (BMRB), took place between March 31 and September 14, 2008. The survey results are combined for the second and third quarters of last year.

According to the MML-TGI survey, 45 percent of the Slovak population read the national daily newspapers. This percentage had not changed from the combined first and second quarterly period conducted from January 7 to June 22, the TASR newswire reported. Nový Čas dominates the ranking, far ahead of other daily papers. Sme, Plus Jeden Deň and Pravda recorded only small changes in their circulation.

Most-read dailies

1. Nový Čas (number of readers: 1.2 million; percent: 25.9 %)

Nový Čas was founded in 1990 as the first Slovak tabloid. With a lead of hundreds of thousands of readers, the newspaper has dominated the charts of most read Slovak dailies for years. The daily is published by the Swiss company Ringier Slovakia.

2. Sme (394,000; 8.82 %)

The Sme daily was founded in 1993 and from the start it has been critical of social, political and economic conditions in Slovakia, especially during the 1994-1998 Vladimír Mečiar government.

3. Plus Jeden Deň (381,000; 8.54 %)

This tabloid entered the Slovak media market in 2006 and from the beginning successfully attracted a significant number of readers, ranking as the second most read in September 2007. However, it has never reached the same numbers as its main competitor, Nový Čas.

4. Pravda (380,000; 8.51 %)

Pravda started in 1920 as the weekly of the Czechoslovak Social-Democratic Party in Slovakia. It became a daily in 1925, by then attached to the Communist Party. During WWII Pravda was published as an underground paper. Today Pravda is a privately owned daily.

5. Šport (178,000; 4.0 %) – sport-oriented daily

6. Korzár (160,000; 3.6 %) – daily appearing in eastern Slovakia

7. Hospodárske Noviny (122,000; 2.7 %) – financial daily

8. Új Szó (70,000; 1.58 %) – Hungarian-language daily

9. Avízo (70,000; 1.56 %) – classifieds daily

10. Prešovský Večerník (14,000; 0.3%) – regional daily

RADIO

The proportion of respondents who had listened to the radio on the day before the survey was 71 percent.

Most-listened-to radio stations

1. Rádio Expres (number of listeners: 1.02 million; percent: 22.8 %)

Expres is broadcast across the whole of Slovakia, with an accent on short, fast news bulletins, detailed traffic information and popular music.

2. Rádio Slovensko (825,000; 18.5 %)

The first channel of the Slovak public service radio broadcaster Slovenský Rozhlas, focusing on news and opinion journalism.

3. Fun Radio (601,000; 13.5 %)

The first private radio station in Slovakia, it started broadcasting in 1990. Based on its music profile, Fun radio is categorised as European Hit Radio.

4. Jemné Melódie (358,000; 8.0 %) – ‘more music, less words’ is the philosophy of this station.

5. Rádio Okey (296,000; 6.6 %) – rock-pop radio.

6. Rádio Regina (290,000; 6.5 %) – regional channel of Slovenský Rozhlas.

7. Rádio Viva (177,000; 4.0 %) - contemporary pop.

8. Rádio Lumen (124,000; 2.8 %) – Christian radio.

9. Rádio_FM (65,000; 1.5 %) – alternative music channel of Slovenský Rozhlas.

10. Rádio Hey! (59,000; 1.3%) - Slovak and Czech mainstream.

3. STV1 (Jednotka) (28%) - channel one of the public service broadcaster Slovenská Televízia (STV)

4. STV2 (Dvojka) (6%) - channel two of STV

5. TA3 - news channel; Prima - Czech private channel; Nova Czech private channel (all 4%)

6. RTL Klub (3%) - Hungarian-language channel

7. ČT1 (2%) - channel one of the Czech public service broadcaster
