Slovakia's two top webhosting companies have recently changed hands, reports Index magazine.
Last week, the country's number 2 company in the industry, Webglobe, was acquired by Swedish owner group.one which operates in 12 countries. Since 2022, Cinven, a multibillion-euro British private equity fund, and the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, one of the largest pension funds in the world, have been behind this Swedish firm.
Webglobe, founded by Igor Strečko in 1999, manages more than 300,000 domains in Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Serbia.
Soon after, the number 1 Slovak webhosting firm, Websupport, was bought by Belgian company team.blue as it took over Swedish company Loopia Group. Websupport was founded by Michal Truban who sold it in 2018 to Loopia Group when he entered politics and co-founded the Progresívne Slovensko party, the strongest opposition party today.
The acquisition boosts team.blue's number of customers from 2.5 million to more than 3 million across Europe.
The financial group behind team.blue is Hg Capital, which has been investing in software and service companies for many years.
