Tourism numbers down but revenues up in 1999

Income from tourism in Slovakia in the first half of 1999 rose to 9.5 billion crowns, 53% (in Slovak crowns) up on the same period last year. The increase comes on the heels of a 10.4% fall in the country's foreign currency income from tourism in 1998, to 17.2 billion crowns.

1999 income in dollars was up 30.8% to $231 million.

Despite the healthy income rise, the absolute number of foreigners visiting Slovakia in the first six months of 1999 was down 10.7% compared with 1H98 to 12.2 million. Foreigners visited mostly the High Tatras, Bratislava and southern Slovakia.
