Unemployment up slightly in July

THE UNEMPLOYMENT rate in Slovakia was 7.47 percent at the end of July, up 0.05 percent from June. Compared with July 2007, it was down 0.83 percent, the SITA newswire reported, citing statistics from the National Labour, Social Affairs and Family Office.

Job seekers able to take up jobs immediately numbered 194,841 at the end of July. This was 1,386 people more than in June. Compared with July 2007, the figure fell by 20,948 people.

Labour offices reported a total of 224,770 job seekers at the end of July, a rise of 1,853 people compared to the previous month but a decrease of 21,142 compared to a year ago. The unemployment rate based on the number of all job seekers was 8.62 percent at the end of July, a 0.08 percent increase from June and a 0.84 percent fall year-on-year.

Banská Bystrica Region reported the highest unemployment rate in July, at 13.32 percent, followed by Košice Region with 12.22 percent. Prešov Region was third with 11.33 percent. As before, Bratislava Region had the lowest jobless rate, at 2.12 percent.
