THE COMPANIES involved in building a highway bridge which collapsed on November 2 near the villages of Kurimany and Iliašovce in Prešov Region, killing four and injuring 12, will compensate some of the victims’ families. Representatives of Váhostav – SK and Bögl & Krýsl promised that every month until the end of the investigation they would pay an amount equal to the salaries of the four workers who died in the accident, the SITA newswire wrote.
“The deceased were oftentimes the breadwinners of the family, which do not now know what to do,” said Transport Minister Ján Počiatek, as quoted by SITA. “Therefore one of my basic tasks after this tragedy will be to ensure that those affected most by the collapse of the [bridge] supporting frame are not forgotten.”
Meanwhile a team of specialists attempted to blast off the remaining part of the collapsed bridge. The explosion was not entirely successful, though the upper part of the bridge was detached. A construction team then intervened to remove the weakened bridge using heavy equipment, the TASR newswire wrote.
Počiatek has also met representatives of the construction firms to discuss continuation of the highway construction work, which was halted because of the tragedy, SITA wrote.
