BUDGET airline Wizz Air is to end its operations at Bratislava Airport. Following protracted talks with the airport, the company decided to ditch its plan to establish a base in Slovakia, the SITA newswire reported.
As a result, it is cancelling its sole regular line, from Bratislava to Rome, as of January 11, 2010. The company said it was disillusioned at being unable to agree business terms with Bratislava Airport, Wizz Air executive director John Stephenson said, as reported by SITA.
Wizz Air is now the biggest budget airline in central and eastern Europe. It started a regular service from Bratislava to Rome on September 20 this year. The company currently operates four flights a week to Rome.
As of November 3, Irish budget airline Ryanair has also been operating a regular service from Bratislava to Rome's Ciampino airport.
Slovak low-cost carrier SkyEurope Airlines had operated a regular flight to Rome from Bratislava before it went bankrupt in late August.
