Workers are to be paid more for working night and weekend shifts.

As of June, workers will receive a supplement for working during non-standard hours that is linked to the minimum wage. Previously, the supplement comprised a fixed amount, the SITA newswire reported.

The measure came into effect on June 1.

The final sum varies slightly for workers that regularly need to do their jobs during nights and weekends. The sums are also adjusted for people working in particularly arduous conditions.

Weekend work

Wage supplements for occasional Saturday work will now be at least 50 percent of the minimum hourly wage, which equates to €2.01 extra per hour. The previous sum was €1.79 per hour. For workers who regularly work on Saturdays, the sum is set slightly lower, at 45 percent of the hourly minimum wage, which amounts to €1.81 per hour (up from €1.61 per hour).

The minimum hourly wage in Slovakia is €4.023 as of January 2023.

The amount of the supplement for work on Sundays will rise from €3.58 to €4.03 for each hour worked. Regular Sunday workers will receive at least 90 percent of the minimum wage per hour, which will amount to €3.62 per hour of work. It was €3.22 per hour until the end of May.

Night shifts

The supplement for working night shifts, from 22:00 to 6:00, will now be 40 percent of the minimum wage per hour, or €1.60. For those whose jobs represent a potential danger to their health, the sum will be €2.01. It is at least 50 percent of the minimum wage per hour.

If the majority of work is required to be performed as night work, an employer can agree with workers on a lower amount. However, it cannot be less than 35 percent of the minimum wage per hour (€1.40).

Also, if the work environment makes the performance of work difficult, an employee is entitled to a higher hourly supplement, €0.80. It was €0.72 until May.
