MÁRIA Čírová has won the eighth annual Coca-Cola PopStar music contest. The victory earns the young singer a chance to record a debut album, the SITA newswire wrote.
The jury, chaired by singer Peter Nagy, picked Čírová after the contest’s final, which took place in the Aréna Theatre in Bratislava on May 30.
“Mária was a favourite from the very beginning,” Nagy told the Plus Jeden Deň daily.
The 19-year old conservatory student from Dolné Lovčice also won the Coca-Cola Media Star award after the April semi-final.
“I write the music mostly myself, but the band (Andrej Hruška - guitars, Filip Hittrich - bass, Jakub Hittrich – drums) influences its final form,” Čírová told the Pravda daily. “Except in some cases, my friend Gabo Guniš writes lyrics for me.”
Past winners of the contest include Misha and Zuzana Smatanová, who served on the jury this year, and the Peoples band, which won it last year.
