Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák met US Ambassador to Slovakia Theodore Sedgwick on Monday, March 18, the TASR newswire was told by the ministry's press department.

The diplomats first discussed the transatlantic meeting that took place in late February in Rome as part of the European tour of recently appointed US Secretary of State John Kerry. "I want to emphasise that we need to strengthen political ties between the European Union and NATO as the main platform for cooperation within the transatlantic sphere," said Lajčák, praising Kerry for choosing Europe as the venue of his first foreign trip. At the meeting discussions were also held over issues related to energy security and developments in the Western Balkans and in the countries belonging to the EU's Eastern Partnership initiative. The two officials voiced their support for the planned summit slated to take place in Vilnius in autumn 2013 and to feature the EU and the Eastern Partnership countries.

Also broached was US-Slovak cooperation within the ISAF mission in Afghanistan and the Slovak contribution to the EU-Tunisia Task Force transformation programme co-chaired by the Netherlands.
