Bratislava 19 May 2016 – There is always a reason for industrial action. Yet higher remuneration should never be the only driving force behind the action. Slovak teachers urgently need a defined career growth with remuneration linked to it. “The availability of career growth would significantly increase their motivation to engage in professional development and learning,“ says Klaudia Bednárová, the President of the Slovak Association of Language Schools, which is the main convenor of the 6th annual ELT Forum.

The major international event will be held on 10 and 11 June in Bratislava at the Economics University. It draws together an array of international speakers, including some of the leading global specialists on methodologies, such as Guy Brook-Hart, Dave Spencer or Robert Smith.

“Even though the profession of a teacher is indeed a vocation, we shouldn’t confuse it with volunteer work. Only a few young and talented people choose a profession without the perspective of career development or a more significant financial growth,” points out Klaudia Bednárová. She asks how many young teachers see themselves at school in ten years from now.

Bednárová considers the issue to be quite complex: “Schools should be run by managers who are well aware of the fact that top quality teachers are the greatest assets of any school. Hence the need to invest energy as well as money in them. Yet, it is also up to the government to act,”  concludes the President of the Slovak Association of Language Schools.
