Night of Museums and Galleries 2017 around Slovakia

The annual event opening museums and art galleries to the public, the Night of Museums and Galleries, has not been limited just to Bratislava – and each time, more and more institutions participate.

This year, on May 20, there are several novelties as well. Not just in the Bratislava Region but also in Banská Bystrica and Zvolen there will be special transport bringing visitors to the normally less accessible venues with the ticket to the Night of Museums serving as a fare.

Thus, around 40 museums in the Bratislava Region will become more accessible for both inhabitants and visitors, from the well-known Červeny Kameň Castle, some municipal museums (e.g. Senec, Pezinok, Veľké Leváre), to venues opening specially for this night, like the Holly Stairs of the Franciscan Monastery in Malacky. There are several round tours revolving around the main attractions on offer. (Please click here to see programme for the Bratislava Region and Bratislava City.)

In big cities like Banská Bystrica/Zvolen or Košice, museums decided to follow the example of the capital and offer entry to all local venues for the single ticket purchased at the first venue. Many regional – and some specialised – museums are participating as well, some of them offering special accompanying events, unfortunately in Slovak. There are three museums in Banská Bystrica – and the forestry museum in Zvolen, while in Košice, there are three museums and the ÚĽUV gallery.

Many castles will also stay open until late at night, with some – e.g. Bojnice Castle, administered by the SNM – offering special accompanying programmes. The ghost stageings at Bojnice do not need much Slovak language skill.

Also all the branches of the great national institutions – the Slovak National Museum (around 50 museums in total) and the Slovak National Gallery (in Pezinok-Schaubmar Mill, Ružomberok and Zvolen) – will be open until late at night, with the goal of showing visitors some background facts, making the exhibits more open to the public and also showing some yet unknown sides of the museology and gallery work.

Píšem or pišám?

"Do ľava," (to the left) I yelled, "Nie, do prava" (no, to the right), I gasped. "Dolšie," I screamed. "Nie, nie, horšie..." My Slovak girlfriend collapsed in laughter. Was it something I said?
