THE SLOVAK National Gallery in Bratislava presents Science Fiction, Delight and Zen, an exhibition about the eventful life and work of Vladimír Havrilla, a Slovak artist whose oeuvre includes sculptures, paintings, drawings, films, and computer graphics. The exhibition expresses a burning desire for harmony and integration into the absolute, despite social or personal obstacles and a trace of irony and scepticism. His major themes are Views through Matter, 550 BC, Crashed Airplanes, Prayer, Labyrinth, Pentagram, Corner Man, Mimicry, The Return of Odysseus, Miss Moon, Mr Yang and others. The exhibition shows a highly aesthetic work created in the tradition of great classics, such as Raphael, Brancusi or Galanda. Set against the backdrop of Slovak Conceptual Art, it is a fusion of irony, virtue and clever naiveté. The Slovak National Gallery sits in the Esterházy Palace at Nám. Ľ. Štúra 4, in Bratislava. Falconry days at Červený Kameň castle between April 15 and 16 will open the summer season at Slovak castles. Throughout the weekend, visitors can see falcons, eagles and other birds of prey by the Astur club, St Bavon and Acquila groups in period clothing between 10:00 and 17:00. In the past, these birds were used for hunting, but nowadays, they prove useful, for example, at airports, where they scare away birds that might cause airplane collisions. Falconry shelters also serve as a rescue station for injured wild animals. During the castle event, handicraftsmen will display their arts and a rich programme for children, including a pony ride or carriage ride, will also be available. Those interested can also visit exhibitions at Červený Kameň castle. For more information, call 033/6905-827.
