Intelligent street lighting is in a testing phase in Poprad. The lighting can measure the density of traffic, save energy when there is no need for full lighting in the night and can also call the police. Via a smartphone app, when someone presses the SOS button, the lamp starts flashing intensively so that police receive a signal that something is happening at a particular place and they can intervene, Dobré Noviny wrote.

Poprad is the first Slovak city to implement this kind of street lighting, which is already popular in other countries, on a wide scale.

“The town can get data from these lamps about the number of people who are walking there and could be more accurate when talking about repairs and winter maintenance,” informed the Facebook page of the city where they announced the instalment of the new lighting.

Functions of the lighting could also widen to measure air quality. These lamp were installed at frequent walking roads connecting the city centre with the housing estate Juh, Dobré Noviny reported.
