DALIBOR Karvay took first place from among nearly 100 talented violinists from around the world at the David Oistrakh International Violin Competition in Moscow. During the demanding competition, held at the Moscow Conservatory between September 29 and October 8, the young musicians had to show their abilities in three rounds, playing virtuoso works by Paganini, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Prokofiev and others, the Feeling agency said in a press release.
Karvay, the only representative from Central Europe, advanced to the final round masterfully. During the final, to which six violinists advanced, he played a composition by Johannes Brahms with an orchestra. His performance persuaded the jury unequivocally that the first prize in the main category of the prestigious completion belonged to the Slovak violinist.
The last time Slovaks enjoyed hearing the 23-year old Karvay play, along with baritone Dalibor Jenis and soprano Katarína Štúrová, was the sold-out Golden Violin concert at the Expo Arena in Bratislava on September 1.
Before year-end, however, Karvay will give more concerts in Europe. In November he will be a member of the delegation of Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič paying an official visit to Greece, and in December he will perform at the new Tower Stage theatre in Bratislava.
Karvay will devote the following months to preparing for the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition, considered to be one of the most prestigious and difficult violin competitions. It will take place in Brussels in May and will last an entire month.
One of the most successful emerging Slovak artists, Karvay was born in Vrútky in 1985 and has been playing violin since he was three years old. Later, he studied at the Vienna Conservatory with the well-known violin pedagogue, Prof. Boris Kuschnir.
