ONE OF the most significant documentary photographers of the 20th century, Martin Martinček, died at the age of 91 on May 2, only a day after Slovakia's entry to the EU.
Originally studying to become a lawyer, Martinček entered the Slovak photography scene in the late 1950s and has impacted it significantly ever since. He has received recognition at home and abroad and influenced the viewpoints of many young documentary photographers.
Considered the master of depicting the traditional rural world that is gradually disappearing and capturing the fate of its people, his photos speak in Dušan Hanák's documentary film The Pictures of the Old World (1972), and narrate history in a handful of books.
