The National Bank of Slovakia (NBS) has issued a special silver collector's coin with a nominal value of €10 and a commemorative coin with a nominal value of €2 in recognition of the 100 years' anniversary of the death of Milan Rastislav Štefánik, one of the founders of the first Czechoslovak Republic.
He lost his life in a plane crash near Ivanka pri Dunaji on May 4, 1919.
The NBS expects that there will be great interest from collectors which is why there will be 1 million coins altogether in circulation, the TASR newswire reported.
A limited number of coins
The coin is minted by the Mincovňa Kremnica company. Sales started at the museum in Košariská, situated in the house Štefánik where was born, the museum’s head, Alena Petráková told TASR.
“There are 10,000 silver collector's coins in proof quality and 3,650 in ordinary quality,” explained Milan Kubík of Mincovňa Kremnica’s marketing department, as quoted by TASR.
Štefánik was a significant Slovak personality and this is why not only collectors but also the rest of the public are interested in having such a coin, he added.
Ask for a coin at the NBS
The designers of the silver coin are Mária Poldaufová and academic sculptor Ivan Řehák. The designer of the commemorative coin is Peter Valach.
“The NBS will exchange valid euro banknotes and coins for commemorative €2 coins in a limited amount of 50 pieces per person,” said spokesperson for the NBS, Martina Vráblik Solčányiová, as quoted by TASR. “The commemorative €2 coins can be obtained at the cash desk of the central office and at its branches during opening hours.”
