TWO articles written by journalists of The Slovak Spectator (TSS) received prizes at the 2nd Journalistic Competition Baroro - Kamienok 2003, organised by the Slovak Cabinet Appointee for Roma Communities, Klára Orgovánová, and the Open Society Foundation. The aim of the competition for print and electronic media is to encourage journalists to remove stereotypes of Slovak Roma.
TSS staff writer Lukáš Fila won the Main Award in the print media category for his article Making Fun of the Roma, published last year, in Vol 9, No 34. According to the five-member jury, he identified and professionally processed a theme that has had an impact on altering the perceptions of the Roma community common among the Slovak majority.
TSS freelancer Andrea Chalupa received a prize from the Roma Press Agency for Mixed Marriages Defy Widespread Prejudice, Vol 9, No 21, for "simply processed, but strong, stories of mixed couples that symbolically represent the relationship between Roma and the majority in Slovakia".
TV Markíza won two prizes in the electronic media category.
