Bean* - The jam-packed movie theater echoed with laughter. Rowan Atkinson is simply hilarious as Mr. Bean, a bumbling character who can make even the easiest everyday life experiences difficult. The plot brings Bean to America where everyone thinks he is a master art historian. Bean makes a mess of it all, ruining lives and families with his antics. His humor is a pleasant reminder for us not to take life too seriously.
Lost Highway* - Director David Lynch (Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet) ventures into the bizzarre once again. Bill Pulman and Patricia Arquette shine in this twisted dark tale about fear.
My best friend's wedding* - Watch out. Cupid is shooting poisoned darts. The champagne is spiked. Suddenly, Hollywood has decided that romantic comedy is a genre best served blackened, with My Best Friend's Wedding, a heartburned guide to sabotaging your old beau's nuptials. Julia Roberts is dazzling as th sexy schemer and Cameron Diaz is the sweet princess bride Roberts is trying to knock out of the picture. (Tú svadbu treba zrušiť)
Contact* - Ambitious, relatively spiritual and displaying the characteristic craft of Director Robert Zemeckis (Forest Gump), this 2 1/2-hour take on Carl Sagan's 1985 novel deals with celestial concerns that have little to do with men in black, Bat-folk or Con Air's airborne thugs. Jodie Foster makes contact with intelligent extraterrestrials. As ever, Foster conveys professional drive and vulnerability with the best, but the movie flubs its human angle. (Kontakt)
Basquiat* - The short life and career of Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) is depicted brilliantly by actor Jeffrey Wright. Basquiat, a black artist, was a star on the New York art scene in the 1980's, but his life came to a tragic end with a heroin overdose. Julian Schnabel, a close friend of Basquiat, worked on the biographical movie for six years. Gary Oldman, David Bowie, Dennis Hopper, Christopher Walken and Wiliam Dafoe make up the supporting cast.
Peacemaker* - George Clooney and Nicole Kidman save the world from terrorists gaining hold of nuclear weapons, all in Bratislava. The film was shot in Slovakia's capital last summer and disguised to be Vienna. Don't expect much, but the film is a fun action thriller with lots of suspense. (Mierotvorca)
