THE FIRST month of spring has arrived but it seems that winter is not yet ready to leave. Temperatures in the mountains have dipped well below zero and it even snows on and off. Unfortunately, this is not the heavy snowfall that would dramatically change skiing conditions in our mountains. Unpredictable weather – so typical for the passage from winter to spring – is expected this week. Night temperatures may sink to minus ten degrees and the day temps will oscillate between minus 6 and minus 2 degrees at an altitude of 1,000 metres.
It is hard to believe – but nevertheless true – that skiing is not possible in the highest altitude ski resort in Slovakia, Lomnické sedlo, due to lack of snow! But conditions on the southern slopes of Chopok have improved to “very good”. Maybe the best news is that prices of ski passes are now reduced at most resorts after March 8. For example, in the PARK SNOW resorts of Donovaly, Veľká Rača and Štrbské Pleso, there is a 30 percent reduction from €22 to €16. And Jasná is offering multi-day ski passes where each day can be as cheap as €13, as a 7-day ski pass is only €91.
The prices for accommodation have been dropping, too, as the school holidays are over and the ski season continues. As there is still winter weather in our mountains, this will be the second-best period for good-value skiing (the first week of January is still best).
The Jelení Grúň snowboard park in Jasná holds the fourth race of the NOKIA Snowboard X Tour – the Slovak Cup in freestyle snowboarding on March 13. Donovaly will also see a lot of snowboarders as experienced riders will coach a girls’ snowboarding camp at Záhradište from March 11 to 14.
