It was one of those moments in which the world changes. Most people in Slovakia did not realise it at that moment, but journalists, overcome with shock and horror, knew immediately: after the death of our colleague, things will not be the same again.
Still, few of us expected events to unfold the way they did. As the day, weeks and months progressed, with new revelations by the late Ján Kuciak and his bereaved colleagues, the country’s leading investigative journalists, it dawned on almost everyone that Slovakia was going through a transformative experience.
The departure of Robert Fico from the top executive post was one of the main symbols of that transformation. Ironically, one year after the murder of Ján Kuciak and Martina Kušnírová, it is Fico, his party and a group of other people within the ruling coalition who seem not to understand what has really happened to Slovakia since last February.
