The third government of Robert Fico will not finish its term; that much is now clear. But the movement that has emerged in Slovakia over the past two weeks is not just about suspicions that some ruling politicians are preying on the system. There were other reasons why people have gone onto the streets in huge numbers twice in the past two weeks.
The impetus for those gatherings is not just a desire for change in the upper echelons of Slovak politics, even though that is one demand that the crowd can most easily articulate in their ‘enough of Fico’ chants. But the emotion that drove them onto the streets was deeper than anger. It was grief over the young couple who were killed, and the horrified realisation that we live in a country where the cold-blooded murder of a journalist is possible.
