THE NUMBER of young people drinking alcohol has been rising in Slovakia, say health experts.

Alcohol, according to the experts, has had a massive impact on the young generation - especially on those aged 15 and 16. Health officials blame the situation on the lack of efficient alcohol restrictions in Slovakia, the daily Narodná obroda wrote on January 7.

Ľubica Majtanová of the State Health Institute warned that if Slovakia does not strengthen its prevention efforts, a generation of young alcoholics would soon be rising in this central European country.

Surveys show that one third of young people aged 15 and 16 have already experienced a hangover.

According to statistics, in 2003, Slovaks drank just as much as they did in the 1990s, as the annual alcohol consumption reached between eight and nine litres of alcohol per capita.
