The old, unused customs house in Slovenské Ďarmoty in Veľký Krtíš district in eastern Slovakia is likely to be turned into a municipal house of services. Just a few years ago the customs house was a busy checkpoint on the border with Hungary but after several unsuccessful attempts by the Customs Directorate to sell the two unused buildings to a private owner the municipality has shown interest in acquiring and using the complex.
“At least we should get the custom house as a present. However, its cession to the local administration is still being arranged,” Mayor Denisa Arvayová of Slovenské Ďarmoty told the TASR newswire. The better-preserved of the two buildings would be made into a municipal house of services, she said, and the other building would probably be demolished. The whole complex covers as many as 15,000 square metres.
The Slovak Customs Directorate also announced an offer to sell the customs house at the Hungarian border crossing of Kráľ that covers more than 1,300 square metres. This customs house has been acquired by the village of Abovce which intends to rent it or use it for a joint project with Hungarian authorities. Mayor Irena Hanobiková of Abovce would like to see the building turned into a workplace that could employ local residents but said cooperation with the Hungarian village of Bánrévé is also possible for a joint cultural project building cross-border cooperation.
