ONE YEAR after the French retailer Carrefour announced that it was leaving the Slovak market, the Dutch retailer Ahold, which runs the Hypernova and Albert stores, has announced similar plans.
According to the Pravda daily, Ahold decided to leave Slovakia because it was neither the market leader nor number two on the market and achieving such a position would require major investments and management attention. Ahold is also leaving the Polish market for the same reason.
Ahold operates 22 Hypernova hypermarkets and three Albert supermarkets in Slovakia and employs 1,800 people.
The Slovak leader on the retail market is Tesco with annual turnover of Sk22 billion. The second most successful in terms of turnover is Metro (Sk16.2 billion). Billa ranks third with Sk9.7 billion and is followed by Kaufland with Sk8.5bn and Ahold with Sk7 billion.
