Delegates at the fifth congress of the Slovak Healthcare and Social Services Trade Union (SOZ ZaSS), held in Piešťany (Trnava Region) on May 19, voted to begin a strike alert today, May 21, and demand a 30-percent pay raise.
SOZ ZaSS vice-chair Anton Szalay, elected at the congress, said his first steps would be aimed at supporting the healthcare unions’ demands for a pay rise.
According to Szalay, collective bargaining is currently taking place.
"Our proposal includes an extra week of holiday time, shorter working hours and changes to salaries," Szalay said.
The second round of bargaining is due to take place in Košice on May 25.
He also said he was interested in closer cooperation with another union - the Medical Unions Association (LOZ), which announced its own strike alert on May 1.
