THE AVERAGE nominal monthly salary reached €821 in the first quarter of 2014, with the pace of growth accelerating by 1.6 percentage points to 4.1 percent year-on-year, the Slovak Statistics Office (ŠÚ) reported on June 4.
A low rise in consumer prices also coupled with an increase in the nominal salary resulted in a year-on-year hike of 4.2 percent in real salaries. Meanwhile, the seasonally-adjusted nominal monthly salary rose by 1 percent on a quarterly basis.
A breakdown of the figures for the first quarter of 2014 reveals that the sector of financial and insurance activities posted the highest average salaries (€1,796 per month), followed by information and communications activities (€1,709) and supplying electricity, gas and steam (€1,358). The lowest average salaries were found among employees in accommodation and catering services (€463), miscellaneous activities (€513) and construction (€566).
Wages grew the fastest in financial and insurance activities (16.7 percent), followed by extraction and quarrying (13.7 percent) and administrative services (9.9 percent), the TASR newswire reported, quoting the ŠÚ data. The biggest drops were seen in expert, scientific and technical activities (2.1 percent), construction (1.9 percent), and water supplies (1.2 percent).
Of the country's eight regions, only Bratislava Region had a higher-than-average mean nominal monthly salary (€1,098). The average salaries in the remaining regions ranged between €605 in Prešov Region and €744 in Trenčín Region.
