The boy's parents are Slovak citizens who have lived in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, for many years. They wanted their son to be buried in Slovakia.

The tragedy took place in Siem Reap, Cambodia, where four attackers took international school students hostage and held them for ransom.

The boy was shot dead when one of the gunmen became unnerved with his crying when police surrounded the school. All four hostage-takers were captured.
