Slovakia did not need the first part of the Vatican Treaty, which deals with religion in the armed forces and religious education.
The agreement stands in the way of Slovakia's development, MEP for Smer Monika Beňová said on TV Markiza's politics show 'Na Telo' on June 8.
Therefore, referring to the outstanding additional agreements concerning conscientious objection and church financing, she said she thought Slovakia should not sign any further agreements with the Vatican.
But Daniel Lipšic, vice-chair of the opposition Christian Democrats (KDH), sees the treaty as a priority, saying the promises made by the former government should be kept.
Beňová thinks that a law on abortions would put emotional pressure on society and women. She is convinced that women recognise the enormity of abortions, but believes in the right of choice. Lipšic has called for a compromise, arguing that abortions in the first trimester represents a grave moral problem.
Beňová also expressed support for registered partnerships. She said she does not see why homosexuals should not be able to share the rights of the majority. On the issue of adoption for same-sex couples, Lipšic said that children should not be victims of social experiments. He added that such important decisions should be made in Parliament. TASR
