THE BISHOP of Banská Bystrica, Rudolf Baláž, in a sermon delivered during a recent mass, encouraged church members to not vote for Iveta Radičová, the joint opposition candidate in the upcoming presidential election. He reproached Radičová for her opinion on abortions and her statement that society can agree on what is moral and what is not, reported the Sme daily.
“No politician can say that morality is a social agreement,” Sme quoted Baláž as saying. “Does this sentence mean that if the society agrees that a murder is not a sin and a violation of law, we can kill? This is for the stupid.”
According to Baláž, both Hitler, with the agreement of the German parliament, and Stalin with the consent of society, executed millions of people.
“Let’s not push these types to the head of the society,” he said, adding that, sadly, society is led by people who do not understand the Ten Commandments.
Radičová asked the bishop for a personal meeting on February 26. She said Church officials have the right to give their opinion on the election, but they should use a "sensible and true way", Sme reported.
"The bishop didn't mention any candidate's name," Zuzana Juhaniaková, a spokesperson for the bishop, said. She denied that Baláž had indirectly compared Radičová to Hitler.
