THE SLOVAK capital has two more laureates of the Július Satinský Award Bratislav-ská Čučoriedka (Bratislava Blueberry). Blueberries is what Satinský, a famous actor and writer, used to call crisp young girls in their teens. At the Bratislava ceremony, Eva Siracká received the award in the category Idea–Deed for her long work in fighting against cancer and for founding the Centre for Help. And a peculiar view of life, full of humour, secured this award for writer Tomáš Janovic in the category Personality, the TASR newswire wrote.
The Bratislavská Čučoriedka has been awarded for the sixth time by the Honorary Council. Every year, personalities – either individuals or groups residing in Bratislava – are given the award.
“The main purpose of the award is to recognise the humanity which enriches our spirituality in honour of the heritage of Július Satinský,” Katarína Rimóczyová, the award coordinator and member of the Honorary Council, told TASR.
Members of the Honorary Council, chaired by Viera Satinská (Július Satinský's widow), are the founder of the award, Katarína Rimóczyová, and Milan Lasica, Marián Labuda, Dana Lapšanská, Karol Kállay, Iveta Malachovská and Štefan Šlachta. Each year they look for inspirational deeds or influential people in the Bratislava area for the category Idea–Deed, to award those who have made valuable contributions, often less visible, and with impacts which are not always fully appreciated.
Citizens of Bratislava who have strongly contributed to strengthening the identity and importance of the city within their sphere of social influence and career by spreading its fame and good name are given awards in the category Personality.
Eva Siracká, who won the award in the Idea–Deed category this year, was the first woman in Slovakia to devote her life's work to radium therapy. She founded the Czechoslovak Association of Radium Therapy, Radiology, and Physics. In 1991, she founded the League against Cancer in Bratislava, which has become a member of the European Associations of Leagues against Cancer, as well as the International Union against Cancer, and last year she established the Centre for Help.
Tomáš Janovic, this year's winner in the category Personality is a person whose motto is the idea “We thrust knives into each other's backs so that we can dine with silver cutlery”. This author of epigrams and aphorisms is a native of Bratislava and writes satirical poetry and prose for adults, children and young people, lyrics, radio plays, and scripts for TV musical and entertainment shows.
His fairy tales have been translated into the Czech, Slovenian, and Serbian languages. Janovic’s literary works have been awarded many prizes by the publishing house Mladé Letá, and by the Union of Slovak Writers. He also won the Dominik Tatarka Award for 2005 for his book Maj ma rád (Do Like Me).
