Cabinet approves revised Penal Code

THE CABINET has approved a revised draft Penal Code submitted by Justice Minister Daniel Lipšic, according to the daily SME.

The minister had to withdraw the bill from parliament last month because, said the minister, changes to the law made by MPs would have created a "mafia haven" in Slovakia.

Lipšic reworked his draft and found a compromise solution over clauses disputed with ruling coalition partners.

The minister managed to get a clause on the criminal responsibility of companies into the new draft.

The draft still has to be approved in parliament, however, where the clause has several strong opponents. The opposition Movement for a Democratic Slovakia as well as Smer are against it.

Slovakia's cabinet lacks a majority in parliament and therefore has to rely on the support of independent MPs.

Lipšic is aware that just because he managed to convince his coalition partners in the cabinet, he is not yet home and dry.

"This is just one fight won, the battle in parliament is still ahead," he said.
