The Hungarian parliament received the approval of Hungarians living abroad for changes to the controversial status law that gives members of Hungarian minorities in other countries special rights. However, the changes are not enough to satisfy Slovak objections to the law.
Even the leader of the co-ruling Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) in Slovakia, Béla Bugár, believed that the changes did not go far enough.
"On the basis of statements [Slovak prime minister] Mikuláš Dzurinda has made until now, I do not think he will be enthusiastic about the amended law," he said.
The law is intended to encourage Hungarian minorities in other countries to study in Hungarian and feel part of a greater Hungarian community.
