The government on June 27 discussed and passed a proposal to raise the excise tax on cigarettes beginning in October 2012 rather than in March 2013 as originally planned, the TASR newswire reported.
"The proposed excise tax hike on tobacco products will have a direct adverse impact on households of smokers, as the price for a pack of cigarettes will rise by some €0.10 (VAT included)," states the proposal submitted by the Finance Ministry, quoted by TASR.
The Finance Ministry expects to see additional revenue of €8.15 million in 2013, €8.51 million in 2014, €8.87 million in 2015 and €9.22 million in 2016, TASR wrote.
