The ruling coalition in unlikely to succeed in passing a proposal prepared by Justice Minister Lucia Žitňanská intended to divide the posts of Supreme Court president and chair of the Judicial Council, the TASR newswire reported. Both posts are currently held by former justice minister Štefan Harabin.
To pass the law the coalition needs at least 13 votes from the opposition parties. However, some MPs from the biggest opposition party, Smer, have already announced that they will not support Žitňanská’s initiative.
“Perhaps I would agree with splitting the posts, but this proposal stinks and is brimming with efforts to do away with somebody,” said Smer MP Mojmír Mamojka, as quoted by TASR. “He [Harabin] may have peculiar manners at times but we can't change a law, let alone the constitution, just because somebody doesn't suit us,” Mamojka added. “This smacks of mangling the rule of law.”
