A DEMONSTRATION against the war in Iraq on March 21 attracted only a handful of people, most of them pensioners and members of the country's smallest opposition party, the Communist Party of Slovakia (KSS), which organised the event.
The KSS called for Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda's cabinet to "stop the bloodshed of Iraqi people". The Slovak government has several times expressed its support for US-led military action against Iraq, and has sent an anti-chemical unit to Kuwait to help the international coalition.
Demonstrators carried banners with slogans such as "Stop USA", "Blood is not Oil", and "Bush-War Criminal, Humanity Has Damned You". The peaceful demonstration was monitored by a police car patrol and another six policemen.
