The Communist Party of Slovakia (KSS) held a protest against capitalism on May 1 in Košice. Some one hundred party members, adherents and young anarchists marched through the streets, calling on passersby to join them and protest against exploitation and social injustice. KSS Košice city committee chairman Ivan Gaľa told the TASR newswire that communists traditionally make their protest heard on May 1.
"Although this day is called Labour Day, 23 years later [after the Velvet Revolution] there's no reason to celebrate any more, what with our 400,000 unemployed, plummeting wages and high prices," he said. Gaľa stressed that the demonstration was aimed against capitalism and for socialism, jobs for everyone and a dignified life. "We want to mobilise and organise people, so that they can unite and overthrow capitalism in a socialist revolution," he said. Demonstrators sang the Song of Labour and the Socialist Internationale.
In Bratislava, a smaller group gathered to hold a communist-style celebration on May 1.
