A contract between the National Highway Company (NDS) and the Doprastav-Strabag consortium for construction of an 11.2-kilometre stretch of the D1 highway between Fričovce and Svinia in Prešov Region was signed on November 2, the TASR newswire reported.
Transport, Construction and Regional Development Minister Ján Figeľ attended the signing along with representatives of the construction industry, citizens and motorists who will benefit from this project.
Doprastav-Strabag won the state tender with a bid of €114.6 million after another bidder (Hant) was excluded from the tender. The construction, which the ministry said will cost some €153 million less than if it had been carried out via a PPP (public-private partnership), is expected to be finished and opened in November 2014.
Work on the project is expected to generate some 800 jobs and will start within the next three weeks. Opening of this section of the D1 between the Branisko tunnel and Prešov should significantly relieve traffic transiting Hendrichovce, Bertótovce and Chminianska Nová Ves.
