Prime Minister Robert Fico's cabinet has set up a new body to advise the government: a new government council for non-governmental organisations (NGOs), which is to be chaired by Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák and whose members will be nominated by the end of August.
Serving as deputy chairs of the council will be the state secretaries (i.e. deputy ministers) of finance and foreign affairs, the government proxy for the development of a civil society, and the chairman of the chamber for NGOs. The council will have two chambers: one made up of state secretaries and other members nominated by the government, and the other including representatives of NGO platforms.
The council will have a mandate to submit government proposals concerning a strategy for developing NGOs and civil society, the TASR newswire wrote. Furthermore, it will comment on every serious issue relating to building an appropriate environment for the existence and running of NGOs. It will also address legislative proposals and measures that could affect NGOs.
