IT TAKES only 20 minutes to get from Bratislava to Wolfsthal, in Austria, and the two places are now connected by a Bratislava city bus service. Bus number 901, which started running on May 24, now connects the Slovak capital with the Austrian border town. The route starts beneath the Nový Most Bridge, passes by the Incheba exhibition compound in Bratislava and terminates at Wolfsthal railway station, the SITA newswire wrote.
"The line is intended for those who regularly commute between the two towns, since a strong Slovak community lives in Wolfsthal," Branislav Zahradník, the chairman of the Bratislava public city transport company, Dopravný Podnik Bratislava (DPB), told SITA. "People need to get to schools or to work here, or they travel for culture or to do shopping in Bratislava."
The mayor of the Austrian town, Gerhard Schödinger, confirmed that Austrians welcome the new line.
"It means the region is gradually growing together," said Schödinger. "People want to get to know their neighbours from Bratislava, and this is what is happening here.
According to Zahradník, extension of the service to Hainburg is still under consideration, and depends on the success of the line to Wolfsthal.
The bus runs twice an hour during the week and once an hour at weekends. On sunny days the bus will also have a trailer for bicycles. The fare for adults is Sk50 or €1.50. The discounted fare for children and young people aged 6 to 26, and for pensioners over 60, is Sk25; children up to six years of age can travel for free. Tickets are available at automated ticket machines or can be purchased from the driver.
