CITIZENS of Slovakia’s neighbouring countries top the list of foreigners who are most often subject to criminal prosecution in Slovakia. In 2012, Czech citizens were the most prosecuted foreign nationals in Slovakia, with 326 of them facing prosecution, the TASR newswire reported from the report on the activities of the prosecution for 2012.
Czechs were followed by citizens of Hungary (154), Poland (116), Romania (64), Austria (39), Germany (35), Italy (32), Vietnam (27) and Bulgaria (26). Other foreigners who were subject to criminal prosecution in Slovakia in 2012 were Macedonians, Russians, Moldovans, Serbians, Turks, Chinese, French, Americans and Syrians, among others.
Criminal prosecutions against foreigners in Slovakia grew in the year-on-year comparison. While in 2011 altogether 1,111 foreigners faced criminal prosecution for 1,357 crimes, in 2012 there were 1,235 criminal prosecutions for 1,395 crimes.
Crimes committed by foreigners in Slovakia involved mainly economic theft and fraud, as well as murder and causing harm to the health of others.
In 2012, altogether 571 foreigners were found guilty in Slovak courts, a significant increase compared to the previous year, when 362 foreigners were condemned.
