Michal Dočolomanský, an actor known for his roles in the films Adéla ještě nevečeřela (Adela Hasn’t Had Dinner Yet) and Tajemství hradu v Karpatech (The Mysterious Castle in the Carpathians), and as folk legend Jánošík in the musical Na skle maľované (Painted on Glass), has died after an eight-month bout with lung cancer. He was 66.
“I don’t care how long I live, just that I live at full blast,” Dočolomanský said recently.
Born on March 25, 1942, in Poland, Dočolomanský studied at the Theatre Academy in Bratislava, graduating in 1964. He got a job with the Slovak National Theatre, where he stayed for decades. He will likely always be remembered for playing Jánošík in Na skle maľované, but his personal favourite play was Ibsen’s Peer Gynt.
Dočolomanský was commonly cast in Czechoslovak films of the 1970s and 1980s, including Medená veža (The Copper Tower), Noční jazdci (The Night Riders), Tisícročná včela (The Thousand-Year-Old Bee), and Mŕtvi učia živých (The Dead Teach the Living).
He underwent heart surgery in 2004 and gradually stopped acting, but kept his theatre roles as long as possible. He was awarded an emeritus of art, and in 2007 received the Ľudovít Štúr Award, 1st Class. ČTK
