AN ELDERLY woman lost a leg on February 2 in Prešov after she was struck by a drunk-driving police academy student. It was the fifth serious accident involving bodily harm or death that intoxicated police have caused this year.
The latest culprit, Robert L., 23, of Prešov, was found to have 1.4 parts per thousand of alcohol in his blood.
Police were involved in two other accidents over the weekend, and in one the police driver left the scene after hitting a motorcyclist.
Interior Minister Ivan Šimko said after the latest tragedy that he would ensure police crimes were tried in future before a military rather than civilian court.
