THE CABINET will take no further decisions on privatization sales until early parliamentary elections set for June 17, Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda has said.
Dzurinda, leader of the ruling coalition Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), made the statement in a televised debate on the Slovak Television (STV) public channel on February 12.
However, Dzurinda said he was willing to negotiate other possibilities with opposition representatives. The privatization of railway cargo transporter ZSSK Cargo is a particularly thorny issue, as final bids had already been submitted and a winner recommended when the ruling coalition collapsed last week, sending the country towards early elections.
Deputy Prime Minister Pál Csáky, vice-chairman of the Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK), has said the government will halt the privatization of Cargo Slovakia if the opposition disagrees with its completion.
The leader of the strongest opposition party, Robert Fico, has said his party will have the prime minister recalled by parliament if the government attempts to complete the ZSSK Cargo sale.
