VICTORY in Europe Day, which commemorates the 61st anniversary of the end of WWII, marks "humanity's victory over an evil that had no precedent in human history", Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda said in an official statement.
"On this day, we remember the victims of fascism and give thanks to those who sacrificed their lives in the fight for freedom and peace," he said.
Dzurinda also pointed out that while some societies began building a free and prosperous Europe after WWII, others soon found themselves enclosed in a "cage of fear" behind the Iron Curtain and had to wait decades before finally attaining democracy.
